The Differences Between a Wedding Planner and a Wedding Coordinator

August 4, 2017

The terms Wedding Planner and Wedding Coordinator are sometimes used interchangeably, however, it is important to note that there are a few key differences between the two. While a Wedding Coordinator does act as a planner in that they assist you with on-property coordination, they are a direct representation and salesperson for the venue at which they are employed.

This means that their loyalty is to this particular venue and their goal is to ensure that you follow through with having your wedding there; however, this is not to say that the venue Coordinator does not have your best interest at heart. Their main services are executed on the day of your big event and their job is to make sure that you have a confirmed booking and make a deposit which guarantees that you intend to follow through with holding your event with them. A Wedding Coordinator’s main focus is delivering agreed services at the venue on the day-of.

On the other hand, a Wedding Planner works for you as your personal consultant. Her services are to assist you from beginning to end in making your big day a success, regardless of what your venue and vendor choices may be.
She assists you by personally providing you with top of the line options for you to choose from in regards of each aspect of your wedding and is with you each step of the way of the planning process. The relationship you develop with a Wedding Planner versus an on-site Coordinator is more personal and makes you feel comfortable and at ease.

In addition to the aforementioned, you may decide you want to hold your special day at a location that does not have a structured venue in which case it is a wise decision to enlist the professional help of a planner. Planning a destination wedding away from home can be a scary thought when you do not have the necessary help to ensure things go smoothly. While a venue Coordinator can assist you with planning your wedding at the venue where they work, a planner is more flexible in terms of your overall preferences.

When planning your destination wedding be sure to weigh your options in terms of affordability, necessity and overall preference. Each couple and wedding is unique and it is up to you  to determine what services you feel best fit your needs. Happy planning!
